Experience The Acquired Tastes Difference!
Acquired Tastes offers you a smaller, more personal rafting experience. Our guides do only one trip per day. Other rafting companies do two half-day trips per day with the same boat and the same guide. Our guides do not have to rush back to the office to pick up more customers so they take the time to make your rafting trip special. We focus on how much fun we can make your trip rather than on how fast we can get you off the river.
Many of our customers not only come back to raft with us year after year, but they also recommend us to their friends, relatives and co-workers. Our satisfied customers are our best source of advertising and we take pride in making each rafting trip a quality experience.
Since our guides do only one trip per day, they have the energy and enthusiasm to make your rafting trip special rather than just herding you down the river. Our guides do not “burn out” like the guides who do two trips per day for the production line rafting companies.
Many of our guides return to guide for us year after year. We pay our guides more than other rafting companies pay and we treat our guides with respect and consideration. Our trips are by reservation only so our guides know the evening before whether they are working the next day. Guides who are not scheduled to work are free to go kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, or whatever else they want to do that day. Rafting companies that cater to walk-in business require their guides to hang out at their rafting office (often without being paid) in case motorists driving by stop and want to go rafting.
We pay extra to take out on private property so we are able to give our customers more rapids and more time on the water. How do we pay extra to take out on private property and still keep our prices competitive with the production line rafting companies? We focus on giving our customers the best on-river experience possible but we keep our off-river expenses low. We have a modest office in a great location with river access. We put in at our office for our Brown's Canyon One-Day Trips, which is more convenient for our customers. Since we do not have to drive our customers to a public put-in, the put-in at our office also saves us money on shuttle costs. Our office is on the back side instead of the highway side of Gunsmoke Travel Plaza so our office rent is relatively low. We buy used shuttle vehicles from government agencies. These vehicles have been well-maintained so they are safe and dependable but cost much less than new vehicles. We also save additional money on shuttle costs because our guides are our shuttle drivers. Our guides drive our vans to our private take-out at the beginning of each day. They park the vans at our takeout, return to our office, and then guide our customers down the river. When our trips come off the water, our customers load into the vans and our guides drive them back to our office.
Acquired Tastes has been rafting the best Colorado whitewater under the same ownership since 1986. We offer you a smaller, more personal rafting experience with more rapids and more time on the water. We have one on the best safety records on the river.
We invite you to get away from production line rafting and enjoy the Acquired Tastes difference! Our friendly, well-trained guides will make your rafting trip a truly special experience!
Acquired Tastes Rafting offers you
SAFETY, FUN, EXCITEMENT, ADVENTURE!
Customers often ask how we came up with the name “Acquired Tastes Rafting”. There is a saying that “the finer things in life are acquired tastes.” When Chuck and Judy Huggs founded Acquired Tastes Rafting in 1986, their goal was to build a company based on providing a higher quality rafting experience. They wanted Acquired Tastes Rafting to be one of the “finer things in life”. Chuck and Judy shared a passion for rafting and they worked together for decades to build Acquired Tastes into the kind of company they could both be proud of. Chuck still guides and is still actively involved in the day-to-day operation of the company. Rafting is not just a business for us. It is a lifestyle. We hope you choose to raft with Acquired Tastes and share our passion for rafting.
GET AWAY from Production Line Rafting!
Acquired Tastes Rafting Offers You:
A Smaller, More Personal Rafting Experience!
Our guides do only one trip per day so we focus on giving you a higher quality, more personal rafting experience. The production line rafting companies do two half-day trips per day with the same boat and the same guide. Our guides do not have to rush back to the office to pick up more customers so we focus on how much fun we can make your trip rather than on how fast we can get you off the river.
2 MORE RAPIDS!
Our Brown's Canyon Bonus Half-Day Trip includes 2 extra miles and 2 extra rapids. We share a private takeout with one other rafting company. We raft 12 miles and do all eight of the major rapids in Brown’s Canyon, including Seidel's Suckhole and Twin Falls plus ALL of the intermediate and smaller rapids. We offer you the longest Brown's Canyon half-day rafting trip with the most rapids and the most time on the water. No other rafting company gives you more rapids. The production line rafting companies raft 10 miles and do 6 of the major rapids in Brown's Canyon. They miss the last two big rapids - Seidel's Suckhole and Twin Falls - because they use the public takeout at Hecla Junction.
Acquired Tastes has provided safe, fun, exciting whitewater adventures on the Arkansas River under the same ownership since 1986. All of our boats are state-of-the-art self-bailing rafts with foot cones glued to the floor for added safety and security. We are a licensed outfitter with one of the best safety records on the river and our guides are certified by the State of Colorado.
Everyday Low Prices!
Our prices for whitewater rafting are some of the lowest in Colorado. We are the “Best Rafting Value in Colorado” because we provide higher quality rafting trips at everyday low prices. We give you more rapids for your money!
We give your group an additional 10% off our everyday low prices for a group of 12 to 23 people or an additional 15% off for a group of 24 or more people.

If you organize a rafting trip of 18 or more people, one person will raft for free. If you organize a rafting trip of 36 or more people, two people will raft for free.
